Candlemas in Gö – February 2 2021 Gravel/Road Ride

DE
Eine 34 km lange Fahrt mit 13 Gravel Sektors auf halbem Weg zwischen der Wintersonnenwende und dem Frühlingsäquinoktium.

ENG
Today marked the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Christians celebrate the day as Candlemas and for many communities it marks the end of the Christmas period and the time to take down the tree and decorations. For Christians it is the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary amongst other things and involves lighting candles.

Looking back into pagan history the day was also marked as ´Imbloc´ a two-day festival celebrating the goddess Brigid. Later the Christian rebranded it as the Festival of Saint Brigid and Candlemas. Both pagan and Christians I assume celebrated to make the winter more bearable.

The ride today was a mix of gravel, concrete and asphalt roads. Rather than the minus temperatures which have kept us off our bikes in recent days for fear of ice, it was a heady plus 4!

The rain fell consistently, and we rode through lots of mud and over wet gravel, it was all pretty bleak, but spring is coming!

The Ride: 33km and 13 gravel sectors.
