April 2023 Rides

A page featuring galleries and links for cycle tours undertaken during April 2023.

I ride regularly, and I do not necessarily post a web page for each tour I do.

I do post to Facebook, Garmin Connect, Strava and occasionally to Komoot and Instagram.

Nörten-Hardenberg Omloop – April 30 2023

Andrea, Craig, and I happily rode 26 gravel sectors, lots of feldweg and a wee bit of straße on this Sunday ride to Nörten-Hardenberg close to Göttingen.

We followed a variation of the Gö Feldweg North Omloop, and we made a pit stop at old Nörten-Hardenberg where we stared up at the ruined castle, drank coffee from a machine and lamented that there was no food being served.

Thanks to Andrea and Craig for the company.

(Omloop means circuit in Flemish)

Ride Far mit Paceheads Graveln in Gö – April 29 2023

Paceheads in Göttingen organised a gravel ride and Gö Gravel joined in.

We started and finished at Paceheads. The route was a figure of eight and whilst some continued to complete the 100km ride I and others stopped at the 50km mark.

The parcour profile resembles a chainsaw blade and although vertically challenging at times it was a very cool ride.

Paceheads are an interesting bike company and are well worth checking out.

The event was part of series of Orbit 360 rides coordinated by a group working to promote cycling worthy causes.

Gö North Feldweg Omloop – April 26 2023

A new Gö Feldweg Omloop travelling north of Göttingen following the Leine Valley reaching out beyond Bovenden and Nörten-Hardenberg.  This ride has a page of its own with links to route info and pictures.

Like Summer in Gö – April 22 2023

Despite a stiff wind (as ever in the Leine Valley) it felt like summer had come early on this ride. We took advantage of this to wear shorts, showing off our hairy knees and wore not one item of winter wear.

On Sunday, the Tour de Energy is held, this is a mass participation event held over closed roads on the west side and central Gö, thus we stayed away from the area and enjoyed the east side. We will visit the event at the finish and hope to say hello to people and give big cheers to the finishers.

Last time in the TDE event village I enjoyed watching the Turnverein Roringen von 1928 e. V. (local village club) do some amazing things with their skipping ropes, and I hope they are there again this time.

Scouting Gö North Feldweg Omloop – April 19 2023

I pedalled never far from the Leine River, railway lines or centuries old trading, postal and military routes.

For me this was a little poignant because when I first started visiting Gö I would see the endless Feldweg from the train and I wondered if they were as cool as they looked. They are!

On the ride I took the wrong turn three times, and I lost my pink Rapha coat meaning I had to retrace my steps to find it. The finalised route of this ride in the Feldweg Omloop collection will I think be approximately 50 kilometres in length.

There are NO HILLS on this ride! But if the winds blow it can take your breath away (just like Paris Roubaix)

Blowing away the Doldrums in Gö – April 17 2023

Our mini-wetter station in the garden says we have had eight centimetres of rain fall over the weekend and I don´t think it stopped at any time.

Now, with blue in the sky, it was great to get out with the sun shining and we were able to blow away our physical and mental doldrums.

We kept to the roads, asphalt Feldweg or Betonweg as much as possible hoping not to get too dirty on the gravel trails.

A needle-sharp wind blew meaning we had to work at times for our fun.

This little spin I think will set me up to ride the new northern version of the Gö Feldweg Omloop later in the week…

And big news! The three chairs of Sieboldhausen have been joined by a wooden bench.

Scouting Routes in Gö – April 13 2023

It´s fun to scout new roads or to linger over known trails and to take time to snap pictures. This means that when I get to ride a new route, I won’t have to stop so often to capture the flavour of the terrain or the ride.

Slowly the Gö North Feldweg Omloop is taking shape.

Ostern in Gö – April 10 2023

We rounded off Easter with a small runde of gravel trails near Göttingen. Plus, we enjoyed over the Easter period both bonfire and fire basket, choccy eggs, Oster Markt, and the Paris Roubaix cycle race.

The ride was tougher than it needed to be on a day where I wore no elements of my winter ensemble, it was tough because of a super strong wind that blew hard into our faces.

Gö Gravel Full Moon Evening Ride – April 6 2023

Before electricity people would welcome a full moon as an opportunity to travel at night to visit friends and attend events. Moonlight would guide them along unlit paths (no asphalt).

We had the benefit of modern cycle lamps although we started too early to really appreciate the Full Moon.

We did see a red moon; Josh led us up a big hill upon which Konstantin soared the heights and it was so much fun to ride in a group in the dark with our lights putting each other in the spotlight.

Danke to: Josh, Jen, and Konstantin for their company – none of whom stopped to howl at the moon…

Northerly in Gö – April 4 2023

After making a big effort riding the 80km Gö Gravel Strade Bianche on the previous Sunday I wanted to stretch my legs without breaking them.

I don´t normally cross to the north of Gö, but I like the Feldweg there (asphalt, concrete, and gravel) and the river path is nice. Importantly, there are no hills!

The river path sadly is partly closed, one reason for this was the need to make safe three World War Two bombs which lay close to the trail. Still causing disruption is the installation of Combined Heat and Power pipes.

Göttingen Stadt is inspecting 80 plus sites for WW2 ordnance and since 2019 when I arrived in the city numerous dangerous devices have been found. This has led to three mass evacuations.

Prior to this in 2010 three bomb disposal personnel were killed in Gö whilst attempting to defuse a device.

In 1945 the area of Bovenden and Lenglern saw the largest land battle in Gö when a Panzer counterattack was soundly beaten by the US 3rd Armoured Division (1945 combat video). Furthermore, a big fear for many was that the huge munitions facility at nearby Lenglern would be blown up by the retreating Nazis. Had they done so it would have caused a 30km blast area which would have included Göttingen…

I followed my nose using my own internal GPS and I rode along the Leine River, I visited Bovenden, Gö´s railway heritage, Gö University, and the medieval city walls.

Gö Strade Bianche Revised 79km – April 2 2023

I had been hoping to undertake a revised version of the 70km plus Gö Strade Bianche for a long time, sadly my crash in May put it on hold and so it was very cool to finally ride it especially as I rode safely over the same spot where I came to grief. This was a GPS setting ride and it has its own page with more pictures and route details.
