Hello Darkness… – January 14 2020 Gravel/Road Ride

Apart from travelling during the evening when I lived in London, I cannot recall the last time I rode a bike in the dark. In London it wasn´t real darkness because of the street lighting etc. so I can say today I was riding in Bible Black for the first time in many years.

I took the train to Northeim and then rode the ten kilometres to Moringen to meet Bernd Kaminski from Hamburg who was working there. Moringen has interesting buildings some old and quite a few empty shops.

We rode from Moringen to Göttingen taking in nice gravel, we knew the general direction of where we wanted to go otherwise, we made up the route on the wheel following the Leine Valley. Starting late in the day, it soon became dark.

Whilst in Moringen I took the opportunity to visit the Moringen Concentration camp which is situated on the high street. Most people when they think of Nazi camps have the awful images of the large death camps in their minds, but across Europe there were tens of thousands of small, medium and large camps.

Those imprisoned at Moringen ranged across the wide range of Nazi victims and by WW2 end this camp was dedicated to young people. It is estimated that 10% of those sent there died.

Thanks to Bernd for the chance to ride with him.

I turned on my GPS after Moringen.
