Haunted by Varus – November 17 2019 Gravel/CX Ride

I felt inspired after watching ´For the Love of Mud´ by Benedict Campbell with Magdalena Röhrich, Alexander Dittel, Ole Dahms and members of Radsportgemeinschaft Hannover e.V., to venture out on my cyclo cross bike.

The day felt cold, was damp and mist hung over the valley, thus ideal for embracing mud. I mixed gravel with single track and some muddy sections where it was fun to slide my front wheel through the slime in a semi-controlled manner. I guess cross skills stay with you.

In the summer when the temperatures reached 40 plus it was great to go into the cooler forest but even then, and you can see why forests are important in German Folklore, the forest can give you the heebie-jeebies.

Riding alone and feeling a bit vulnerable especially on the fast downhill sections made me cut my speed and take it just a little bit more carefully. All German Forests seem haunted by the lost legions of Varus (Battle of the Teutoburg Forest).

I also included a quick spin to the Bismarck Turm, the old observatories (the University is part of the Worldwide scientific community) and more single track on route home.
