Panzer Ghosts in the Forest – March 14 2020 Hike

Now part of the ´Göttingen Stadtwald´ Natur Park and open to all, Kerstlingeröder Feld and a large area around it was once a major front line Nato/Bundeswehr Panzer Base.

The Panzer Grenadiers based there would often respond to increased alerts by driving just 15km to the Iron Curtain to face the combined might of the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact.

Thankfully they never had to fire in anger.

As you explore the area you can find traces of where once Tigers, Centurions and Leopards roamed, the biggest remaining structures are huge concrete shooting galleries which both men and Leopards would have used for target practice.

Joining us on this walk (Scouting All Along the Watchtowers 7) was Irmi and she told how when her brother was serving his National Service and was confined to barracks, she would supply him with beer and sausage over the fence. Now, that´s who I would call a cool sister!
