August 2024 Rides

A page featuring galleries and links for cycle tours undertaken during August 2024.

I ride regularly, and I do not necessarily post a web page for each tour I do.

I do post to Facebook, Garmin Connect, Strava and occasionally to Komoot and Instagram.

Monthly Tours

Gö Roadie Chemin Blanc Omloop – August 29 2024

A last minute Gö Gravel informal ride saw Ann-Christin, Lukas, and John ride a homage to stage nine of the 2024 Tour De France (men) mixing asphalt and gravel sectors.

The day had seen temperatures in the mid-30s but as we rode the sky became heavy with cloud, with booming thunder and cracks of lightning. At one point we stopped under a bridge because of heavy rain and the risk of being struck by a bolt of lightning.

It was a super ride and at the end whilst eating our ice cream we admired our muddy faces.

Danke Ann and Lukas!

Bon Courage in Gö – August 27 2024

The world spins and people change, but at the heart of life is possessing enough bon courage to be able to say yes to altered states.

A heart attack makes you think wacky stuff like this and today I continued on the dark side by riding my road bike. We pedalled with as much bon courage as we could muster in the summer evening light casting tall shadows.

Allez ice cream!!!

Being A Roadie with Sandra and Andrea in Gö – August 25 2024

A road ride with hills and cool descents plus great views. Hopefully a ride that is the beginning of Sandra finding her cycling Mojo!

Sadly, there were no Walnuts to be found despite us looking hard but it was my longest ride since my heart attack in May – cool!

Gö Gravel Social Ride- Reinhäuser Wald Gravel – August 22 2024

The informal social ventured between the sandstone cliffs to the east of Gö. The ride featured long gradual climbs and fast sweeping descents.

As ever ice cream was a thing, where it was fun to meet Johanna and Klara.

The group was Josh, Damian, Tim, Jakob, Konstantin, Jule, Chris, John, and Johannes (Slowjoe). Plus Joelle and Timor who are not pictured.

More Channelling Tour de France Femmes in Gö – August 20 2024

I channelled once more the Tour de France Femmes especially the solo wins by Justine Ghekiere (Stage 7 and the Queen of the Mountains) and Cedrine Kerbaol (Stage 6 winner).

I also rode solo, and it was tough at times riding into the wind, but I am incredibly pleased as I build my strength on the asphalt. I hit an average 24.5kph speed and at a steady 149 bpm heart rate – cool!

Being Kasia in Gö – August 19 2024

Inspired by the fantastic Tour de Femin and the exploits of the riders we expressed our inner Kasia Niewiadoma by riding on the road, with not a centimetre of gravel visited.

Its so cool to ride on asphalt on a road bike and to zip along at a good steady rhythm. Andrea also rode her new Bockstein road wheels and which she loved.

Gö Gravel Social Ride – August 15 2024

The latest informal Thursday evening Gö Gravel social ride took us to the North of the city following the Thin Blue Line on Komoot or Red if viewed on Strava.

The route is also known as the North Feldweg Omloop featuring no hills but still a challenge if the wind is in your face and there is no hiding place from pedalling. Or from the heat of the sun.

The dust cloud we raised was so very cool.

The group was Ann-Christin, Chris, Diana, Felix T, Hannah, Jakob, Josh, Konstantin, Lara, Maxime, Sebastian S, Johannes (Slow Joe), Vincent, Marius, and Stefan.

Mad Dogs in Gö – August 13 2024

My intention had been to ride an extended Chemin Blanc Omloop, but this track is very exposed with little shade cover. With the sun scorching and temperatures in the 30´s I abandoned it and rode very much within myself. Nonetheless my heart rate average was my best since the heart attack. Elevated I think by the heat.

As the long dead English entertainer Noel Coward sang, “Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun.”

I am part Welsh so I´m excused. I should have gone into the forest where it is so much cooler.

Spinnerai Eisschokolade in Gö – August 11 2024

A relaxed ride to enjoy an eisschokolade at the historic Spinnerei Gartetal a remarkably intact wool mill from when the trade was an economic staple in the area until cheap imports from the USA slave plantations and the British Empire colonies wiped it out.

Gö Gravel Social Ride – August 8 2024

The latest informal social ride took us onto the plateau overlooking Göttingen to the west. This area became notorious as a place for invading armies to make camp and dominate the city. This included Tilly´s Holy Roman Empire Troops of the 30 Years War, the French occupation during the Seven Years War and then Napoleon in the early 19th century.

We passed through some nice old-world like villages and one even had a cobbled street.

It was a cool ride although Andrea and I shortcut the route missing out most of the Dransfelder Rampe the abandoned railway.

Riding into Gö the Leine Riverbanks reminded me of the West Bank of the Sienne in Paris as they were full of people enjoying themselves. It was also fun to meet up with the group at the ice cream kiosk afterward.

The Gö Gravel Group was Josh, Ann-Christin, Sebastian S, Jakob, Stefan, Konstantin, Chris, Lydia, Felix T, John, and Andrea.

Gö Roadie Chemin Blanc Omloop 3 – August 3, 2024

Riding a familiar way is an effective way of gauging my fitness and I followed the exact same route as July 28, but to spice it up I rode it on my road bike.

The track is for the majority asphalt but was interlaced with 16 gravel sections and it features a mix of Feldweg/Betonweg as well. Riding asphalt helps me to maintain a steady cadence and build endurance and I tried to carry a good rhythm through the gravel sectors.

The road bike was super cool on the smooth and I had to slow down because of the fear of punctures on the mild rough stuff. Maintaining concentration when riding a road bike on gravel is mentally tough especially on a 28/26 tyre set up.
