Results, video and picture links from cycle road races to be held in 2020 which feature gravel, pave and dirt.
Road races that have in common a touch of the ‘Roubaixesque’ about them.
I am now based in Germany and so sadly I cannot say that all the video links can be viewed in other countries or will survive review by the geo-restriction or TV rights ‘police’. You can use a VPN service should you be denied access.

NOTE: Please note as of March 13, 2020 many events have been postponed or cancelled because of the CoVid 19 pandemic.
The last event able to be held before the shut down was Le Samyn on March 3. The calendar is therefore subject to change for example the Tour de France now has a late August date. Whether this or other events will actually be run is subject to the status of the virus.
A number of races such as the Tour de France, Paris Roubaix, Strade Bianche, Gent Wevelgem, Post Nord and others featured in our list have been rescheduled for later in the year in or after August. Other races are likely not to be held and are marked cancelled. It is a fluid situation.

Gravel and Tar – January 25 2020
Held in the Manawatu Region of New Zealand this UCI race included five gravel sectors making up approximately 40km of the 100km plus race.
For the first time there was a women’s edition in 2019 and as per normal there was also the ‘Slicks and Stones’ non race ride.

44th Vuelta de Mendoza – February 15/23 2020
An Argentine stage race held since 2012 and in 2019 stage seven, the ‘Queen Stage’ of 93 kilometres between Uspallata and Cristo Redentor de Los Andes (3800m), featured tough gravel climbs.
There is also a mountain bike version held in a region dotted with gravel roads.

Clássica da Arrábida 2019 – March 15 2020 (Cancelled)
The Clássica da Arrábida has been held since 2017 and is a race on the UCI European Tour.
The action starts in Palmela, Portugal and ends at the Castle of Sesimbra, over a route of 182.3 kilometres which included gravel and cobbles as well as tarmac.
There is also a Grand Fondo held on the same day.

Grand Prix de Denain – March 19 2020 (Cancelled)
For 2019 the organisers of the Grand Prix de Denain – Porte du Hainaut held in northern France changed the race from a ‘simple’ sprint race along tarmac by including 21km of pave, over 12 sectors and Paris Roubaix favourites such as the Wallers à Haveluy sector.

Slag om Norg- August 1 2020 (Cancelled)
Slag om Norg is a Dutch race held near to Assen and is centred upon the town of Norg.
It features some 30 kilometres of gravel, dirt and unpaved roads.

Great War Remembrance Race – August 14 2020 (Cancelled)
The first edition of the Great War Remembrance Race was held in 2018 and the race route followed the bitter World War One fighting line in Flanders. There was no race in 2019.
A smaller relation to the Gent Wevelgem road race held in March, the event covers three ‘dirt’ sections – ploegsteerts or ‘plug streets’, the latter pointing out the inability of British soldiers to grasp hold of Flemish nuances in WW1. More notable moments is the fearsome Kemmelberg and the Palinbeek pave.

Dwars Door Het Hageland – August 15 2020 (New date)
The sun shone for the 2019 edition nonetheless many of the off road sections were still wet and muddy from previous storms. A lead group went free and from this one rider jumped away to win.
This race in the past has featured some epic MVDP and Wout battles in the past but not in 2019 as both were elsewhere, nonetheless there were some great cyclo cross riders on the start sheet.
This is a round of the Bingoal Cycling Cup.

Ronde van de Achterhoek – August 22 2020 (Cancelled)
There are thirteen stretches of gravel and cobbles included in the men´s Ronde van de Achterhoek. Although the race itself is not UCI registered it does represent the bread and butter of the very competitive cycle race scene to be found in the area.
The race founded in 1969 came back to life in 2017 after stopping post the 1988 edition.

Gylne Gutuer GP – September 6 2020 (Cancelled)
The Gylne Gutuer GP is an elite men’s race held in Norway where many gravel roads feature. The 2019 edition was a muddy affair!
The race features 28 sections of the loose stuff, some 54.8 km of the 165 race distance was gravel.
The Gylne Gutuer GP is held as part of the Uno-X Development Weekend: – The Hafjell GP (TT) is on the Friday, the Lillehammer GP (tarmac) on Saturday with Gylne Gutuer following on Sunday.

Antwerp Port Epic – September 13 2020 (New Date)
The Antwerp Port Epic is a men’s elite race which draws a number of cyclo cross riders to an event that retains the general ethos of the Schaal Sels road race. This latter race is now held purely on tarmac having straying away from the many sections of gravel and cobbles of recent editions.
The race continues to honour the memory of Belgian cycling journalist Jacques-Charles Sels who died during the 1920 Milan-Antwerp road race. It is also part of the Schaal Sels Trophy competition.

Paris Tours – October 11 2020
The usual sprinters festival that was Paris Tours was given a big pep for 2018 with the addition of seven sharp climbs and over 12 kilometres of gravel roads.
Within the last 60 kilometres the race begins several sectors of gravel roads through the Vouvray appellation vineyards. The 2019 edition saw the gravel sections well prepared making them less harsh than in 2018, nonetheless they did their job and in conjunction with some tight roads and hills, the race was very animated.

Paris Roubaix – October 25 2020 (Cancelled)
Paris Roubaix begat the Tour de France and was first held to promote the newly built Roubaix velodrome, in a town once called ‘Little Manchester’ at the height of the Industrial Revolution. Paris Roubaix like many races also plays a part in a media war fought out between newspapers and it had a role in the infamous ‘Dreyfus’ affair that rocked France before WW1.
The pave is simply brutal (and a head wind can be soul destroying) and the route through Picardy to Northern France, running close to the fighting line of WW1 gave rise to it becoming known as the ‘Hell of the North’.
