Cyclo Cross lends itself to the introduction of whimsy and cycle racing like many other sports can be enhanced in look and feel by racing in the dark under lights, an added nuance is that beer and food can add to a great evening out. For many, cyclo cross races at night offer a carnival atmosphere and an opportunity to immerse your-self in ‘Euro Pop’ in well supplied beer tents.

There are a number of much known ‘dark’ cross races such as Cross Vegas in the USA, Diegem in Belgium and Nacht van Woerden in the Netherlands. A newer promotion is the end of season cross at Waregem in Belgium that draws many of the top international stars.

Across the cyclo cross calendar there are many other night cross races and one event we sorely miss was the Rollapaluza Halloween ‘Muddy Hell’ organised by Casper Hughes and Paul Churchill and held at Herne Hill Velodrome, London in 2010, 2011 and 2012, it was great fun! Although the racing was hard fought the temperament of the riders and spectators was relaxed especially from those who dressed appropriately for this Halloween cross.
