Resurrected in 2018 the Deutschland Tour 2019 stage two came to town and passed close to my new home in Goettingen.
I and many others lined the roads of Goettingen especially the two circuits of the Herzberger Landstrasse climb.
Herzberger Landstrasse which is part of the King of Mountains competition climb is 1.1kms long, 238 metres in height and has a percentage of 4.6%. Legend says that during World War Two the RAF strafed this road because so many top Nazi’s owned villas there.
Although not a huge climb it saw the race explode with the likes of Geraint Thomas (who did so much of the work to catch the stage leader), Andre Greipel and Mark Cavendish dropped.
It was also the spot where Remco Evenepoel (main picture) was finally caught on the second ascent after conducting a solo break for 100 kilometres! Caught so close to the finish when the sprinter teams piled on the pressure and bridged to him with just a short way to go to the line.
We had a great time cheering, blowing our Tour of Britain whistle, ringing our Crawley Wheelers Cycling Club and Rouleur cowbells, plus shaking our clapper – we made some noise! The crowd was pretty awesome as well.
