Paris Tours – October 13 2019
The usual sprinters festival that was Paris Tours was given a big pep for 2018 with the addition of seven sharp climbs and over 12 kilometres of gravel roads.
Within the last 60 kilometres the race begins several sectors of gravel roads through the Vouvray appellation vineyards. The 2019 edition saw the gravel sections well prepared making them less harsh than in 2018, nonetheless they did their job and in conjunction with some tight roads and hills, the race was very animated.

Antwerp Port Epic – September 8 2019
The Antwerp Port Epic is a men’s elite race which draws a number of cyclo cross riders to an event that retains the general ethos of the Schaal Sels road race. This latter race is now held purely on tarmac straying away from the many sections of gravel and cobbles of recent editions.
The race continues to honour the memory of Belgian cycling journalist Jacques-Charles Sels who died during the 1920 Milan-Antwerp road race. It is also part of the Schaal Sels Trophy competition.

Gylne Gutuer GP – September 8 2019
The Gylne Gutuer GP is an elite men’s race held in Norway where many gravel roads feature. The 2019 edition was a muddy affair!
The race features 28 sections of the loose stuff, some 54.8 km of the 165 race distance was gravel.
The Gylne Gutuer GP is held as part of the Uno-X Development Weekend: – The Hafjell GP (TT) is on the Friday, the Lillehammer GP (tarmac) on Saturday with Gylne Gutuer following on Sunday.

La Vuelta stage 9: Andorra la Vella – Cortals d’Encamp 96.8 kms – September 1 2019
There was four kilometres of gravel immediately preceding the final ascent of Cortals d’Encamp, in total the peloton faced 22 kilometres of almost continuous climbing at stage end.
Sadly there is little coverage of the gravel section because of the weather conditions and it was here that both Primož Roglič and Miguel Ángel López crashed as hail lashed the Vuelta.

Colorado Women’s Classic Stage 1 – August 22
The Colorado Classic stage race is held from August 22 to the 25th and for 2019 it is for women only after the organisers dispensed with the men’s race.
In 2018 the race started off in Vail with a gravel climb near race start which they took on for a number of laps and this time in 2019 stage one is out and back from Steamboat Springs.
The route of 88k has plenty of hills and includes 10k of gravel.
Sadly there is almost no video from the gravel despite the stage l leader being caught and the winning move having been formed there. There is a one minute video segment of the climb and a brief glimpse in the highlights package.

Ronde van de Achterhoek – August 18 2019
There are thirteen stretches of gravel and cobbles included in the Ronde van de Achterhoek. Although the race itself is not UCI registered it does represent the bread and butter of the very competitive cycle race scene to be found in the area.
The race founded in 1969 came back to life in 2017 after stopping post the 1988 edition.

A honourable mention of stage two of the Tour Of Utah which began in Brigham City and culminated atop Powder Mountain with the last kilometre run over a dirt road.

Slag om Norg is a Dutch race held near to Assen and is centred upon the town of Norg.
It features some 30 kilometres of gravel, dirt and unpaved roads.

The second stage of the elite men’s Adriatica Ionica travelled from Venice to Grado (189 Km) in Italy and the race was contested over six sections of gravel in addition to the tarmac.

Tour de France Stage 6- Mulhouse /La Planche des Belles Filles – July 11 2019
A wee bit of dirt at the end of the first real mountain test for the 2019 Tour de France riders when they rode up to the summit of the La Planche des Belles Filles.
This 5.5km climb has seen a number of Tour finishes, but for the first time the riders continued up a one kilometre dirt 24% road to the summit proper.

Dwars Door Het Hageland – June 21 2019
The sun shone for the 2019 edition nonetheless many of the off road sections were still wet and muddy from previous storms. A lead group went free and from this one rider jumped away to win.
This race in the past has featured some epic MVDP and Wout battles in the past but not this year as both are elsewhere, nonetheless there were some great cyclo cross riders on the start sheet.
This is a round of the Bingoal Cycling Cup.

Paris Roubaix – April 14 2019
Paris Roubaix begat the Tour de France and was first held to promote the newly built Roubaix velodrome, in a town once called ‘Little Manchester’ at the height of the Industrial Revolution. Paris Roubaix like many races also plays a part in a media war fought out between newspapers and it had a role in the infamous ‘Dreyfus’ affair that rocked France before WW1.
The pave is simply brutal (and a head wind can be soul destroying) and the route through Picardy to Northern France, running close to the fighting line of WW1 gave rise to it becoming known as the ‘Hell of the North’.

Boulder celebrates Colorado’s (USA) oldest bike race held over an almost 19 kilometre circuit containing tarmac and 60% hilly gravel roads.
This is non UCI American homage to the French Paris Roubaix classic and there is also a Gran Fondo.
Top US riders such as Katie Compton have taken part in the past. Men do 4 laps and the women 3 laps.

Grand Prix de Denain – March 24 2019
For 2019 the organisers of the Grand Prix de Denain – Porte du Hainaut held on March 24 in northern France changed the race from a ‘simple’ sprint race along tarmac by including 21km of pave, over 12 sectors and Paris Roubaix favourites such as the Wallers à Haveluy sector.

Clássica da Arrábida 2019 – March 17 2019
The Clássica da Arrábida has been held since 2017 and is a race on the UCI European Tour.
The action starts in Palmela, Portugal and ends at the Castle of Sesimbra, over a route of 182.3 kilometres which included gravel and cobbles as well as tarmac.
There is also a Grand Fondo held on the same day.

43rd Vuelta de Mendoza – 7th etapa – February 23
An Argentine stage race held since 2012 and stage seven, the ‘Queen Stage’ of 93 kilometres between Uspallata and Cristo Redentor de Los Andes (3800m), featured tough gravel climbs.
There is also a mountain bike version held in a region dotted with gravel roads.

Held in the Manawatu Region of New Zealand this UCI race included five gravel sectors making up approximately 40km of the 100km plus race.
For the first time there was a women’s edition and as per normal there was also the ‘Slicks and Stones’ non race ride.
