January 2023 Rides

A page featuring galleries and links for cycle tours undertaken during January 2023.

I ride regularly, and I do not necessarily post a web page for each tour I do.

I do post to Facebook, Garmin Connect, Strava and occasionally to Komoot and Instagram.

Being Existential in Gö – January 24 2023

Winter wetter (and cake) is an existential matter for any cyclist – stay at home says the devil (or is it an angel?) on my shoulder. That is my ´existential angst´ – More Here

Walk in the White Forest – January 22 2023 Walk

Although I can ride my bike in Schnee I don´t enjoy it and so I avoid it.

Instead of cycling, I went for a walk in a snow-covered forest close to home. We began late and large numbers of people had been riding their bikes, hiking, and tobogganing before us and the trails were well used.

You can understand why forests are close to a German person’s heart.

Sherlock Holmes in “The Adventure of the Priory School,” was able to identify a large number of cycle tyre treads and he observed that one of the protagonists in the story had ridden a bike fitted with a patched Dunlop. If I had the same skill, I might have been able to do the same in regard to the many tracks in the snow we saw.

No GPS.

Gö Gravel – For the Love of Mud Winter Series – Let´s Rock – January 15 2023

The mud welcomed the Gö Gravel party ride with open arms as we went back in time 10,000 years by visiting the ancients and the rocks, they lived under at Reinhausen close to Göttingen.

Not only had days of rain drenched all the trails there were some such as at the Weinzenberg (At just over 3km from the velodrome) where *Maus activity had created deep trenches filled with muddy water.

Later we rode the Kopfsteinpflaster Karussell and the track featured lots of interesting rocks.

A challenging tour and huge thanks to all 14 – Josh*, Sandra, Tim*, Renee, Andrea, Andreas, Peter, Konstantin, Henny*, Craig, Def*, Jen, and Mareile*, for their company.

*Five managed to ride to the top of the Rosengarten gravel Climb (26%) – well done to them!

Splish Splash in Gö – January 8 2023

Rain that had fallen for days abated for our ride upon which we rode through every puddle.

Tim showed his inner child by being especially adept at puddle riding and Sandra not to be put in the shade – she bunny hopped into a number of deep puddles creating a super splash each time.

We did start off late due to John and Josh getting the start time confused (Tim and I circled the velodrome until we converged) and later Sandra impersonated a sheep with amazing hilarity.

Thanks to Tim, Josh, and Sandra for the company.

Visiting the Ancients in Gö – January 3 2023

Andrea, Sandra, and I went back in time on this gravel ride visiting Reinhausen situated just outside of Göttingen.

Reinhausen Village and Wald is dominated by huge formations of Red Sandstone rocks. The village is carved into the rock face in places and for thousands of years people have settled in the immediate area.

Mesolithic, Stone Age, and Iron Age peoples have lived here and many sought shelter under the rock overhangs that make up the longest continuous Abri (French word for rock shelter) or rock rooftops in Central Europe.

I ´discovered´ the amazing Canyon of red stone in the Bürgertal on a scouting ride a few days prior and Andrea wanted to see it as well although she recalls going there in her childhood.

To escape the canyon involves a 25% plus climb and on this day both Sandra and Andrea rode much further up it than me!

On our route was the village of Niedernjesa which is marking one thousand years by posting a series of historical signs explaining events that have occurred there. We stopped to read two of them – a brilliant initiative.
