Freddie Frinton Rides

Freddie Frinton Rides are rides which are to paraphrase Freddie,“The same procedure as last time”  from Dinner For One, a cult German film shown each New Year.

These are gravel, road or gravel/road rides that are undertaken regularly and this includes Freddie Frinton Ride One featured here.

Gö Beet – October 24 2020 Gravel/Road Ride

47km gravel und Asphalt Tour in der Leine Tal, Göttingen mit 17 Gravel Teilabschnitte (Strade Bianche).

Ein ´Freddie Frinton´ tour – ´the same procedure as last time´.

A 47km gravel and road ride in the Leine Valley, Göttingen with 17 sectors of gravel (Strade Bianche).

An easy paced ride and perfect for recovery from ill health.

The harvesting of the Sugar Beet means lots of mud on the farm roads currently. This still economically important crop was once the king of crops before Cane Sugar took over although it had a fillip during the British blockade of Europe during the Napoleonic Wars. The stations on the railway line to the Sugar Beet processing plant near Gö are grand.

A ´Freddie Frinton´ ride following the ´same procedure as last time´.

Gö Strade Recovery Tour – October 5 2020 Gravel/Road Ride

My second recovery ride since an infection hit me because I had too many teeth, two wisdom teeth now extracted (stitches out on Tuesday). I say goodbye to the last of these troublesome teeth (they lack any wisdom) in 13 days’ time.

On a road ride last Saturday, I felt discombobulated and today I felt so much better.

Healing needs patience which is rewarded in due course.

On route the corn is bursting ready for harvest, wildflowers are in bloom and dusty Campag Record!

44km but feels like a 100, which is an improvement – cool.

Gö – Spinnerei – Gö or last of the summer kuchen – October 3 2020 Road Ride

A simple asphalt recovery ride after the extraction of 2 of my Wisdom teeth. The intention to eat cake (soft in my case) at the Historische Spinnerei Gartetal for what is the last day of being open for the year.

It was a warm Autumn day.

We rode 38km but it felt like a 100,00000000!!!

On route we came across Gunnar Fehlau and friends on route to the old Internal Grenz to mark this being German Unity Day.

I am surprised that the Sunflowers still being in bloom.

Wear it don´t Smoke it – September 27 Road Ride

We no longer grind plants or other ´hard´ foods with our teeth because of our modern diets and for some rammed at the back of your mouth can be four redundant Wisdom teeth (Weisheitszähne).

It seems most people lose them (called an eruption) in their youthful years, but not me and these evolutionary hangovers remain. Now, mine have become a problem and after two weeks off the bike because of an infection from one of them I will be soon separated from these troublesome Third Molars.

This ride was an opportunity in between infection and surgery to pedal before I likely need to stay off my bike for a few weeks. Patience will be my watchword as it is for all recovery from illness or injury (love to all off their bikes at this time).

On route Sunflowers are back in flower. Also, there is Hemp growing in the fields and as the sign says – good for wearing and not for smoking.

30kms on a simple mostly asphalt circuit in the Leine Valley and I was so tired five kilometres before home.

Late Summer Days in Gö – September 13 2020 Road Ride

Back on are my summer wheels and tyres (I took them off because I thought summer was over). I also wore my best white summer shoes and socks.

Come the Winter I will recall these days with a sigh and I will think about the Spring.

Gö – Besenhausen – Gö – September 9 2020 Gravel Ride

Soon into the ride Andrea snapped her chain, happily this was quickly fixed, and we continued to ride in a relaxed manner out to Besenhausen to eat Goosegog Kuchen close to the now defunct internal border.

We rode out along the Gutingi Strade Bianche route before we swung home in warm weather.

Gö – Kuchen – Gö – September 16 2020 Road ride

They say there is a heat wave on the way for mid-September but whatever the outcome I have been preparing for Autumn and Winter.

Onto my bikes have gone sacrificial wheels and tough tyres, and I had thought that a recent band of welcome rain would have made the roads ´dirty´.

I was wrong, although not as hot as the summer proper we rode in sunshine upon debris free roads.

Goosegog! – August 20 2020 Gravel/Road Ride

Its amazing when I think about it, is that I could take this ride so very much for granted. Before I moved here to Central Europe, I dreamed of riding such gravel roads, but now I can use them to simply go and eat great Goosegog cake. So no, I do not take it for granted.

An odd thing about Central Europe is that the heat of the day isn´t when ´Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun´ rather the heat seems to hit at 4ish.

In a German Forest – August 10 2020 Gravel/CX Ride
A Hedge! – July 18 2020 Road Ride
(All of the above now have their own pages)

Café Society – July 19 2020 Gravel/Road Ride

We started late and cut out quite a chunk of route to get to the Spinnerai Café in time to meet Craig Lee Johnson and Lilja Mareike.

Here we ate cake and greeted many a friendly face such as Frauke and Ralf. (I was pleased that they understand my Freddy Frinton references)

What some Sundays are made for.

Kuchen Gut/Cycling Gut – June 28 2020 Road Ride

I was glad to spin my pedals after Saturday´s solo tough ride and what better goal for a road or any ride than to consume cake and iced chocolate.

The Spinnerei Gartetal e.V. is one of the last vestiges of the once important trade in wool that Göttingen was famous for before cheap imports from the USA and Britain wiped it out. Most of the nearby forests were planted at the end of the 19th century after the many sheep that once grazed there were removed.

The café is open each Sunday in the summer months from 1-6. (Sadly, the mill is currently closed).

Fahrstil Lunch – December 12 2019 Road Ride

A quick lunchtime road ride with Gunnar Fehlau and pedalling with ´riding style´ – (Fahrstil – das Radkulturmagazin).

Freddie Frinton 2 – November 12 2019 Road Ride

We all had a tough ride at the weekend so we didn´t push hard on this ´same procedure as last time´ lunchtime ride. Having braved a strong cold wind, we were rewarded with some sunshine.

On route and as near as we got to the old internal border we stopped and Andrea surprised Gunnar Fehlau by giving him a few pieces of the Berlin Wall which she and her mother had collected in 1989.

Tip of the Iceberg – November 10 2019 Road Ride

Andrea did comment about the state of my bike from my ride the previous day.

Once we had established that it is best etiquette to ride with a clean bike, we took in a 30km road only spin.

It was cold! The coldest I have felt so far since I moved to Germany and that includes our ride in the forest in April when it snowed. I guess the temperature now is just the tip of the iceberg because it will no doubt be even colder at some point and I will have to take steps!

So much of the colour had been drained away at this time although there was a field of purple wild-flowers, which would be nice to know what they are.

New road – November 7 2019 Road Ride

Gunnar Fehlau as part of our lunchtime road ride took us down a great new road, which now links nicely to other routes I have in my locker.
